Auckland's central suburbs will play host to thousands of poppies on Anzac Day, including the largest one ever created.
Hundreds of Aucklanders have made thousands of handmade poppies for tomorrow's Anzac commemorations.
School children, RSA veterans and community group volunteers have created more than 20,000 poppies for the Peace Poppy Project.
A poppy-making workshop was held at Ponsonby's Studio One Toi Tu.
The little red creations will be planted at Anzac events, and available to people for a small donation.
Auckland councillor and culture committee chairman Alf Filipaina says Auckland Council galleries and libraries are supporting the project.
“The peace poppies are a great way for us to remember our war veterans, who helped secure the peace and freedom we enjoy today," he says.
"The council is thrilled to get behind this project and help bring the community together to celebrate the centenary of the First World War in such a special way."
The project is the brainchild of artist Cristina Beth, and Alf Filipaina hopes it will be embraced by the whole of Auckland.
"We hope to see poppies bloom in every corner of the city.”
An installation of 59,000 poppies have also been installed at Auckland Domain, representing every New Zealander killed or wounded in World War I.
The specially-minted red metal discs have been place don the ground to create a giant poppy shape 40 metres in diameter.
The Giant Poppy - the biggest commemorative poppy ever created - will be unveiled today and is expected to draw large crowds tomorrow.
In nearby Newmarket, Anzac Day will be recognised with the City of Auckland Pipe Band marching on Broadway to the War Memorial at Olympic Park.
Mayor Len Brown will speak at the Auckland Museum Hall of Memories at 7.45am, and at the College Rifles ANZAC Day Parade and Service at 9am.
In the Hauraki Gulf, Waiheke will hold a dawn service at 6am and Great Barrier Island will hold its service at 12pm.
In the central city, the New Zealand Dance Company will recognise the day with a performance of Rotunda, a work by Shona McCullagh and Don McGlashan.
Ports of Auckland will turn out lights, and Sky City will host a World War I commemorative display in the Sky Tower, 186 metres above ground.
