At least five people have been injured, some critically, and several roads are closed after a crash in East Auckland this afternoon.

A police spokeswoman referred to the crash as “serious” and urged people to avoid the area.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Botany Rd, Golflands, at 2.51pm.

Hato Hone St John sent four ambulances, two rapid response units and one manager, and transported five patients to Middlemore Hospital.

Glass can be seen covering the road from the crash, along with mangled wreckage from both vehicles.

Traffic is heavily congested from all directions spanning out from the crash site, moving particularly slowly down Cascades Drive and Te Irirangi Drive.

Police have closed off multiple roads around the crash site including:

• Botany and Millhouse Drive.
• Botany Rd and Tarnica Rd.
• Botany and Ti Rakau Drive.
