More Aucklanders are sleeping rough on the streets because they have nowhere left to go.
Auckland City Mission counted 147 regular rough-sleepers within a three-kilometre radius of the Sky Tower last year, up 116 percent on the previous year.
Now, a major new multi-agency study has found a history of physical violence, emotional abuse and childhood neglect can all force people onto the streets.
Lifewise general manager Moira Lawler says it's a point every Aucklander needs to understand and that it's unacceptable for people to have to live on the street because that's the only option they have left.
Lawler says urgent action needs to be taken to stem the tide of people exiting safety nets and ending up on the streets.
She adds time and time again people aren't able to access services, aren't able to source adequate income, and lose their home for preventable reasons.
