Auckland Council has unanimously voted on a plan to pedestrianise Queen Street, and will undertake a trial to remove non-essential cars from the city centre.
The plans will be publicly consulted on before anything is set in stone.
The number pedestrians walking on Queen Street has doubled in the last three years, and it was mooted as far back as 2012 in the Council's city centre master plan.
Despite passing unanimously, at least one councillor, Greg Sayers, says he's not in favour of the plans but will wait to see what Aucklanders think, and how the trial goes.
