Commuters are being reminded the normal rules around driving in bus lanes still apply, despite the bus drivers' strike in Auckland.

Aucklanders are being commended for the way they responded to today's strike this morning, however some motorists were stopped for illegally using bus lanes.

Traffic could become backed up as workers head home for the day, and Auckland Transport's bus manager Brendon Main said it's important those bus lanes stay clear.

"There are still a number of buses across the city still working, also we've had a higher number of cyclists across the city today as well so we're trying to keep those bus lanes clear just to make sure that cyclists still have full use of those facilities."

He said AT is delighted with how commuters handled the bus drivers' strike this morning, but is reminding people it was just the first hurdle.

Commuters have reported dream runs and lighter than usual traffic, thanks to many opting to walk or take alternative forms of transport to work.

Mr Main is urging commuters to keep up the good work as they head home this afternoon.

"This afternoon will be a challenge so if possible travel outside the peaks, use the public transport services that are going-we've still got our train and ferry services operating as normal and selected bus services so really encouraging people to look at their options for this afternoon."
