Over a third of all Aucklanders weren't born in New Zealand.
Auckland has been categorised as a super-diverse city - the key finding of a new report being 40 percent of the population was born offshore.
The Asia New Zealand Foundation report shows the Asian population is young - driven by the large number of students who come here.
But, the foundation's director of research, Andrew Butcher, says there are signs those young people end up staying here.
"But you've also got more recent migrants who've come in the last 20 years who have made New Zealand home and are having children in New Zealand."
Andrew Butcher says one in five Asian people living in Auckland was born in New Zealand.
