Firefighters are at the scene of a fire in a high-rise building under construction in central Auckland.

Thirteen fire trucks are at the Park Residences at 35 Albert St - an almost complete building.

"The fire was located on both level eight and level 14 of the 32-level building," a Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said.

"The fires were extinguished by the sprinkler system and fire crews were checking other levels to make sure there is no other fires."

It is not known if anyone was on site when the fires started.

The fireman in charge, Area Commander Geoff Purcell, said there had been four fires, all on different levels of the building which has more than 30 levels. The fires were put out by automatic sprinklers.

A fire in the building this morning was at the time thought to be accidental. All are now considered suspicious.

The spokeswoman said the fires were being treated as suspicious and a fire investigator and police were on scene.

The main contractor for the construction of the building is Naylor Love.

Its chief executive, Rick Herd, said sprinklers had been set off maliciously and the police were investigating.
