A man has been arrested after allegedly fleeing police, driving on deflated tyres after they were spiked and then attempting a number of carjackings in south Auckland.
The man was apprehended on Great South Road Takanini on Thursday afternoon, police say.
He had allegedly failed to stop for police on Hill Road in Manurewa 15 minutes beforehand.
Road spikes were employed but the driver continued on flat tyres, leading to the police abandoning the pursuit.
"After police stopped following, the driver went on to drive on the wrong side of the road at speed," Senior Sergeant John Roberts said
A police helicopter spotted the vehicle pulled over on Great South Road, where the man was allegedly attempting to carjack a number of vehicles.
He was arrested and taken to Middlemore Hospital for an ankle injury sustained during the arrest.
The incident follows two police chases last month that resulted in the deaths of passengers and drivers.
Police are currently reviewing their policy on when to stop chases.
