Newstalk ZB Summer Breakfast host Tim Dower learned this morning that wolf-whistling is still a common harassment that women regularly face.

A running store is under fire for distributing a safety guide suggesting female runners should cover up and shrug off wolf whistles as "compliments'.

The guide was distributed for Wellington runners by retail chain the Shoe Clinic.

Producer Laura Kneer informed Tim Dower that it happens more than he would expect.

"It happens on the roads, it happens wherever you are. I'm telling you - truck drivers, tradies, couriers, it's just disgusting," said Kneer.

"There is nothing that you'd take as a compliment in that whistle - literally three seconds that destroy a half hour run."
