The newly created free speech coalition are collecting donations to try and reach $50,000 to go to court to contest the ban of right wing speakers Lauren Southern and Stefan Molyneux.
Phil Goff last week banned the pair from speaking at council owned venues forcing the cancellation of the controversial Canadians, and has left many people outraged at being denied the chance to hear the popular speakers.
Melissa Derby, from the University of Canterbury is part of the coalition, and says it is a freedom of speech issue.
"Many people don't seem to understand the dangerous implications of this decision, freedom of speech by definition has to apply to everybody."
