Abortion debate as tricky as ever

The campaign to change our abortion laws is back in the spotlight.

Yesterday, MPs at the Justice Select Committee were told it would be safer for many women having a medical abortion to take the medicine at home.

Currently they have to travel to and from a clinic while potentially suffering from bleeding or stomach pain.

The Abortion Supervisory Committee made a plea with politicians to update the law they see as archaic.

Committee Chair Professor Dame Linda Holloway told Mike Hosking that the issue is as tricky as it has ever been as medical advancements move further away the law.

She says that she is unsure how a conscience vote in Parliament would unfold.

“I think individual parliamentarians are fairly well informed of the dues of the wider sector of the population they take a particular interest in. One might hope that with a group of politicians collectively there might be a reasonable reflection of the views of the population.”
