There are calls for national standards to protect our water.
A report by the Land and Water Forum gives 40 recommendations to the Government including wanting stronger measures to address urban impacts on water quality, and agreeing to set up a land and water commission to stop further damage.
Land and Water Forum chair Hugh Logan told Mike Hosking we need to get greater consistency around managing storm water and waste water.
He says regulating some of those harmful byproducts that are starting to show up in our waterways - like zinc from some forms of cladding - would also help.
Hugh Logan says copper in brake pads is another issue that needs addressing.
