The resignation of Mike King from New Zealand's suicide prevention panel has been described as a great loss.
The comedian and mental health advocate has stepped down in frustration over the ministry's Draft Suicide Prevention Plan, calling it "deeply flawed" and self serving.
"It would be funny if people weren't dying," he said.
Ministry of Health director of mental health Dr John Crawshaw told Mike Hosking Mr King is a staunch advocate for change.
"I was always hopeful that he would remain within the group. He has some strong views, which I respect and value, and my view is we need to hear all voices."
Dr Crawshaw said he understands Mr King's frustration, and in a sense "shares some of that frustration", with suicide rates remaining "stubbornly static".
Prime Minister Bill English on Monday said he wasn't surprised Mr King had struggled with the ministry's way of doing things and believed it would have been better if he had stayed.
