A new right-wing party could give National enough votes to win the next election.

Some National Party members are reportedly in talks to set up a new socially conservative party to provide National with a coalition partner.

Craig told Mike Hosking there's an appetite for a genuinely conservative and independent right-wing party.

The Conservative Party founder said about five-percent of votes at this year's election were wasted right-wing votes and those votes could give National a clear majority in 2020.

"There are plenty of voters unrepresented and if Nat are thinking ahead, they need to think about bringing those people into play."

But Craig said the Act Party's low polling shows voters won't support a National proxy.

"Everyone knows that Act is there by mandate of the National Party and I think that has hurt Act. People began to see Act for what it was - it became a National Part patsy."
