Andrew Little is digging in his toes after raising the prospects of resigning.
Revelations he was thinking about going came as Labour was handed a disastrous poll result.
Last night's 1 News Colmar Brunton figures put the party down three points, to 24 percent.
It's the lowest it has been since the poll started in the 1990s.
Little told Mike Hosking whether he stayed as leader was an inevitable question given the numbers.
"You've got to take that seriously, I take it seriously. You've got to be responsible as well as leader of the party, which is why I talked to colleagues in the way that I did at the end of last week."
But, Little said he will be staying on.
"Part of my style of leadership, which is to deal with others and to face up to the realities, I felt honour-bound to face that as a valid option, no-one wants it, so I'm in this fight."
