A private university in the US state of Kentucky says it will make video games an official sport and offer scholarships, starting this year.

The University of Pikeville will offer the scholarships to people who play "League of Legends", a strategy-based online multiplayer game.

20 scholarships will be offered, and as well as maintaining academic marks, those attending will also have "practice time" and video sessions where they study opponents' tactics.
