Manson murderer gets parole

The youngest of Charles Manson's murderous followers is set to be back on the streets

Leslie Van Houten has been granted parole by a California board, after appearing for the 21st time since being jailed.

Van Houten was just 19 when she killed for Manson in a series of murders that terrorised Los Angeles over the summer of 1969.

She was convicted in 1971 in relation to the 1969 murders of Leno and Rosemary La Bianca carried out by members of the 'Manson Family' in the victim's Los Angles home.

The killings took place a day after other so-called Manson family members murdered actress Sharon Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski, and four others in crimes that shocked the world.

Van Houten was the youngest Manson follower to take part in the killings after joining the cult in the 1960s.

During her parole hearing last year, she said the murders were the start of what Manson believed was a coming race war that he dubbed "Helter Skelter," after a Beatles song.

Manson, 82, and other followers involved in the killings are still jailed.

Fellow family members Tex Watson and Patricia Krenwinkel have each been denied parole multiple times, while Susan Atkins died in prison in 2009.

Last year, a parole panel recommended Van Houten be released after she had completed college degrees and been commended for her behaviour as a model prisoner, but California Governor Jerry Brown denied her parole.

The decision now goes through a process of review in which Governor Jerry Brown may uphold, reverse or modify the decision.
