Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany escaped injury when a charter plane he was aboard skidded off a runway in the east of England.

The Citation CJ2 left the runway during take-off at Norwich International Airport, before coming to a stop on the grass on Saturday.

Five people were aboard the private charter flight, operated by Centreline Air Charter, an airport spokeswoman said.

No one was injured in the incident.

Kompany, who was sidelined for his team's FA Cup third-round game against Norwich City at Carrow Road with injury - a match Manchester won 3-0 - was said to be among the passengers.

The Air Accident Investigation Branch has been informed and will now investigate the incident.

"The cause of the incident is not yet known and the first priority has been ensuring the well-being of the occupants of the aircraft," the spokeswoman said.

"The airport was closed immediately to fixed wing traffic until the aircraft had been removed when it reopened to fixed wing traffic at 9.58pm on Sunday.

"The airport remained open to helicopter traffic. The Air Accident Investigation Branch has been informed, which is standard practice."

A spokeswoman for Centreline Air Charter said it will fly the aircraft to its Bristol Airport base on Tuesday for continuing investigations.
