Fire fighters in Wellington are still battling a fire at a landfill.

The blaze broke out at the Silverstream rubbish dump, on Reynolds Bach Drive, just before six this morning.

Two fire trucks and rural fire teams are at the landfill to douse the fire which is about 30 metres by 40 metres in size.

Fire Service Communications shift manager, Chris Dalton says the fire fighters have contained the size of the blaze.

He says they're likely to be there for some time.
