Labour's universal basic income plan is being blasted as mad by the Prime Minister.

The Labour Party is considering adopting the policy, which would give all adult New Zealanders at least 200 dollars a week.

It says it's something New Zealand needs to consider as the nature of employment changes.

But Prime Minister John Key said he's looked into the numbers and it's "unaffordable and it's barking mad".

"Basically it would cost $38 billion dollars, it might cost 76 billion."
