A tough new regime is being put in place to keep track of criminals who're being deported from Australia after serving their time there.
They'll be subjected to the same sort of oversight as offenders who've served a similar sentence in New Zealand.
The regime will automatically apply to those who've served more than a year in jail and those returning here within six months of their release from custody.
Justice Minister Amy Adams said it would be a graduated system, that would be very similar to the parole system used here. Â
"If they're sentenced to between two and five years, it is a year of monitoring in prison. Â If they're sentenced to more than five years in prison, it is two years of monitoring," she said. Â
Ms Adams also said we don't have a choice whether to accept the criminals.
The new provisions are expected to cover around a hundred people at any one time and will cost in the region of seven million dollars over a five year period.
