Watercare is being accused of broken promises, after failing to show up to a meeting about a proposed water treatment plant in west Auckland.

The council water company is considering taking over 12 to 18 properties in Oratia to build the new plant.

The Save Oratia group says more than a thousand people turned up to a second public meeting on the issue at Oratia District School Hall last night.

Spokesman Chris Stone said residents had lots of questions, but Watercare officials never showed up to answer them.

"There is quite a few unanswered questions, particularly for those who have been living with this for the last few weeks, wanting an outcome and losing a lot of sleep.

There were five empty seats on a stage, in front of a full hall of people.

Stone said locals are disappointed Watercare didn't show up, but they're also hopeful Watercare will change its mind.

"We look forward to hearing from Watercare as to the next engagement we have with them.

"We're looking forward to find a solution that doesn't involve tearing families apart."

Watercare pulled of the meeting on Tuesday, but has committed to taking the residents' concerns into account.

It will make a decision later in the year.
