A stylish 75th birthday for the Royal New Zealand Navy.
The New Zealand White Ensign flown by the Naval Forces was hoisted on the Auckland Harbour Bridge yesterday for the first time.
It's in sight of the Devonport Naval base, the home of the Navy.
Chief of the Navy Rear Admiral John Martin said plans are in place to fly the White Ensign on every anniversary.
"It just needs to be worked through, but I'm really looking forward to that occurring," he said.
"It's great recognition and an honour that the country has sought to recognize the Navy's birthday in this way."
The Naval Forces are also holding an International Naval Review next month, with about 20 nations sending warships to be part of the festivities.
That includes the United States, which hasn't sent a ship to our shores since New Zealand passed its anti-nuclear legislation in 1987.
John Martin said preparations are well under way for the big bash.
"Ships are already leaving some of their countries to get here. It's not only ships but also the leaders of a number of other regional Navy's who are coming as well. It's going to be very exciting."
