The Wellington apartment of Newstalk ZB Political Editor Barry Soper has today searched by police who're attempting to prove charges of forgery and deception against his wife for obtaining a gun without a licence.

Heather du Plessis-Allan anchors TV3's current affair show Story and ordered the gun online to prove how easy it was to get one.

The police immediately closed a loophole that allowed it to happen.

Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders arrived at Soper's apartment this morning to present him with a search warrant.

Barry Soper said its bizarre that the police would want to prosecute his wife, when her work should mean fewer guns on the street.

He described the search as "absurd" when speaking to Canterbury Mornings host Chris Lynch.
