A proposal to unite Wellington and Wairarapa under one council has been scrapped.

The Local Government Commission announced this afternoon it won't proceed with its draft proposal for the region.

Local Government Commission chief executive Sandra Preston said there was little support for the proposal in Wellington - but there is support for some kind of change.

She said the commission is looking forward to working with councils in the area to reach an agreement on the best form of local government.
