Parking cost could triple in Auckland CBD

UPDATED 11.16am: Parking prices on some central Auckland streets could triple under proposed changes by Auckland Transport.

Newstalk ZB understands Auckland Transport is considering two main parking zones in the CBD.

In areas like Wynyard Quarter and Vector Arena, an eight-hour park will go from $16 to $42. In parts of the inner CBD, an eight-hour park will now cost $63.

Meanwhile, Newstalk ZB understands parking in most parts of the CBD will increase by between 50 cents to $1 per hour.

Parking for less than ten minutes will continue to be free, and parking in the first two hours will continue to be cheaper.

Employers and Manufacturers Association's Kim Campbell said people will have to decide if they can stomach the increase, but the reality is Auckland's in for some changes in the way it operates.

"We're in a point of transition," he said. "We haven't got the best roads, we don't have enough parking, and the public transport system is still under-invested."

"That's the really the big part of the problem."

"People and businesses will have to decide whether they can afford to pay people enough to afford to park, or make other arrangements."

Campbell said while the transport network's still getting up to speed, Aucklanders could do better at carpooling, staggering work hours to ease traffic, or biking to work.

Business New Zealand Chief Executive Kirk Hope told Jack Tame those parks are designed for consumers and customers of retail businesses, and Auckland Transport could place a time limit to stop people parking for the entire day.
