It will be unveiled in Wellington today at a symposium aimed at making drinks sold in New Zealand sugar free by 2025.

Marketing lecturer Dr Bodo Lang of Auckland University, says many organisations have asked for a logo that would allow them to show their commitment to being free of sugary drinks.

He said today's meeting will address policy change, which he says must include a tax on sugary drinks, and a nationwide ban on such drinks in schools.

Founder of the anti-sugar organisation Fizz, Gerhard Sundborn, told Andrew Dickens they have a number of different designs that'll be unveiled and voted on tonight.

"There's been quite a demand for it. A number of community organisations and clubs have asked us, do we have something along the lines of a logo that shows they're sugary drink free or that the event should be sugary drink free."

Dr Lang said there's no way we'll have a sugar drink free New Zealand by 2025 without legislation, the most powerful tool we have in our arsenal to fight diseases.

He said evidence implicating sugary drinks in serious health problems, is compelling enough to justify ending the sales of these products.

These problems include obesity, type-2 diabetes, rotten teeth and gout.

The health statistics show that New Zealanders are becoming sicker every year, he said.
