Neighbours are being encouraged to do their bit, in the fight against domestic violence.
More than 50 people gathered at Britomart in downtown Auckland to mark White Ribbon Day.
Ambassador Mark Longley said they want to encourage people to speak out and ask questions if they suspect someone may be being abused.
"When people talk about it, they think that they're going to see some huge act of domestic violence but if you see a woman who's maybe got a black eye or is being intimidated or controlled, just have a word and show them that you acknowledge that something is happening and that you're there to help."
Longley said the problem has been around so long it's becoming an accepted part of society.
He hopes today's public efforts will reach far into communities.
"Domestic violence is one of the great social issues that New Zealand society's facing at the moment but its still in the shadows and we need to bring it out of the shadows and really get people to start talking about it and addressing it in their communities."
