Hundreds of possum tails have littered roads in Northland and Auckland this weekend.
Waitakere Ranges Local Board member Neil Henderson said he's heard reports of people finding the tail trails on roads in Glen Eden, Oratia, Helensville, Kaukapakapa, Dargaville and Doubtless Bay.
He was baffled when he heard the stories.
"It's just the strangest thing, what would make someone want to go on a joy ride with a truck load of possum tails and scatter them like rose petals out the window from Northland down to here? It's really bizarre."
Mr Henderson said one suggestion was the possums had been poisoned.
"At one point someone thought maybe it was something about protesting 1080 drops, but it's kind of a strange way to do it without anyone popping up to say it was us."
