The Mongrel Mob believes it's turned over a new leaf as it prepares to mark its 50th anniversary in Hawke's Bay.

The gang has obtained a special liquor licence for its celebration tomorrow night south of Hastings.

Their licence application was opposed by police, the district liquor licensing inspector and the Hawke's Bay Medical Officer of Health.

But Hastings chapter president Rex Timu said the gang shouldn't be judged by its past.

"I really don't blame the community for being concerned about past history over the last 50 years - we're now focused on the future."

The event will be overseen by senior gang members and Maori wardens.

400 past and present members of the Mongrel Mob will be gathering in Hawke's Bay this weekend.

The event is marking the 50th anniversary of the Hastings chapter's formation and will involve a motorcycle 'memorial run' to various cemeteries.

A celebration will be held tomorrow night in a paddock behind the Te Aute Tavern, south of Hastings.

President of the Hastings chapter Rex Timu said there will be Maori wardens and senior gang members on hand to ensure things run smoothly.
