Twenty-four thousand care and support workers will be paid for the time and costs of travelling between clients from the start of next month, under a new law change.
The Home and Community Support (Payment for Travel Between Clients) Settlement Bill passed its third reading in Parliament this afternoon.
Health Minister Jonathan Coleman said it's an important milestone for recognising the valuable contribution workers make to their clients' lives.
Unions, the Ministry of Health, DHBs and providers have also reached an agreement to guarantee work hours, training and wages based on qualifications.
The Public Service Association said the law will give care workers a fairer deal for their work, and guarantee the quality of care clients receive.
