More than 50 double decker buses will be hitting Auckland roads from October.
The announcement has been made by Auckland Transport chairman Dr Lester Levy in Tauranga today, which is where some of the buses will be manufactured.
The new buses are being introduced by three of the main operators in Auckland, NZ Bus, which will have 15. Howick and Eastern and Ritchies will also have 15 each.
Each bus can carry more than 100 passengers.
During the announcement, Transport Minister Simon Bridges outlined new regulations which will allow the vehicles to operate on our roads.
Transport rules will be changed to allow the heavier vehicles on the roads, as with passengers on board they may be up to 1500 kilograms heavier than the average bus.
Heavier vehicles will be issued permits to operate in urban areas.
Simon Bridges said the change will allow them to have more seats on popular public transport routes.Â
He said the rule changes will start in Auckland but will move elsewhere. Wellington is also considering bringing double decker buses in.
