Former Maori Affairs Minister Sir Pita Sharples is concerned the Maori King's claim for greater Auckland could come at the cost of other Maori.
King Tuheitia has launched a claim going as far as Mahurangi Peninsula, the Firth of Thames and across to the Manukau Harbour and Piha.
Sir Pita Sharples is worried it could undermine claims from other iwi.
He said the Treaty of Waitangi claims process only compensates Maori for about two percent of the losses they suffered under land deals and confiscation.
But he said the process is about good faith between Maori and Pakeha, and represents a honest apology for the wrongs of the past.
