An historic church and popular wedding venue in Christchurch is hoped to be returned to its former glory as restoration work begins.
The heritage-listed Rose Historic Chapel, formerly known as the St Mary’s Convent Chapel was built in 1910, but was severely damaged in the February 2011 earthquake.
Christchurch City Council heritage rebuild manager Richie Moyle said the work planned includes installing new foundation beams and rebuild the collapsed gable walls.
"We're going to remove and preserve and reinstate the beautiful marble alter and also we're going to reconstruct and reinstall all the stained-glass windows."
He said Higgs Construction will be doing the work.
"They've got significant heritage experience. They've done the rebuild of the Knox Church but more importantly they've done the work on the old Government buildings back in 2011 so they're imminently qualified for heritage."
It's hoped in 11-months time the Chapel will be fully restored.
