Auckland's preparing for a housing boom that will see fringe suburbs become cities of their own.
The council's planning committee is today considering a report which proposes 120,000 new homes at locations including Warkworth, Pukekohe and Kumeu.
Rodney local board deputy chair Phelan Pirrie says residents have accepted their towns will be getting bigger since the Unitary Plan was passed.
"Warkworth has got a new motorway going through it and that's going to be built over the next four or five years, the population in Kumeu and Huapai is going to be quite significant," he said.
"They are going to end up being quite major satellite towns."
Pirrie said the fringe cities with proper infrastructure will mean residents can work in their own areas and avoid having to roar down the motorways every day for work.
The report is expected to be approved for public consultation between March 29 and April 18.
