Today marks the 100 year anniversary of the historic evacuation of the last Anzac troops from Gallipoli, right under the noses of Turkish forces.

From December 13, 1915, the 41,000 soldiers across the 160-hectare Anzac sector were progressively thinned so that just 1500 held frontline positions on the night of December 19.

Then in the early morning darkness of December 20, a small group of soldiers dashed to the beach at Anzac Cove, with the last boat spiriting the last soldiers away at 4 o'clock in the morning.

The evacuation has been described as the most successful aspect of the troubled Gallipoli campaign.
