Hamilton could get a medical school, under a new strategic alliance between the University of Waikato and Waikato District Health Board.

Waikato University has this evening announced a proposal for a Waikato Medical School, aligned with Waikato DHB.

It would provide four years of intensive practical medical education for university graduates with undergraduate bachelor degrees.

Auckland University currently operates a medical school in the central suburb of Grafton, and Otago University runs medical campuses in Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington.

Both universities offer Bachelor of Medicine degrees that take at least six years to complete.
