Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce, along with Health Minister Jonathan Coleman, has made the announcement in Wellington today.
"Budget 16 will deliver an additional $97 million in health research over the next four years. This will be the largest ever funding increase to health research in New Zealand's history," said Mr Joyce.
Minister of Health Jonathan Coleman is talking up its significance.
"It signals to New Zealand researchers that there really is a future for them here in New Zealand, and we're really concerned to ensure that career path for young New Zealand clinicians, and scientists and academics to come back and practice their craft at home."
Health Research Council Chief Executive, Professor Kathryn McPherson, is calling it a truly great day for the council and for health research in New Zealand.
"With health research investment, if we get it right, you get two bangs for your buck. You get a better outcome in health research or health for our population but you also generate economic gains for our country."
