UPDATED 6.41PM Digital technology is about to become fully integrated with the New Zealand education curriculum.

Education Minister Hekia Parata made the announcement today at the Advance Education Technology Summit in Auckland.

She said the intention is to allow young people to develop skills confidence and interest in digital technologies to lead them to opportunities across the IT sector.

From now until the end of next year, the Government will consult with stakeholders, design new curriculum content and develop achievement objectives.

It's expected to be fully implemented by 2018.

MYOB General Manager James Scollay said New Zealand's future prosperity is strongly linked to our ability to compete digitally.

He said it’s vitally important that the next generation is equipped with the skills and knowledge required to compete in the digital world.

Mr Scollay said the jobs are waiting and we need to provide the workforce.

“New Zealand’s IT sector is vibrant, exciting, dynamic and job-rich. There are enormous opportunities out there for young people looking for a career in IT. This announcement ensures that the most up-to-date digital learning practices will help tomorrow’s tech graduates gain a foothold in the workforce."

But Orion Health CEO Ian McCrae said it's taken years of waiting, review processes and deliberation by the ministry to instigate very little.

He said the announcement has 'some minor changes', including a pledge, for more consultation.

Mr McCrae said it’s a missed opportunity to spate digital technologies from the likes of woodwork and cooking classes.
