UPDATED 12.23pm The man who killed a promising rugby league player has been sentenced to five years and two months at the High Court in Auckland today.
18-year-old Vincent Angene Skeen was last month found guilty of the manslaughter of 17-year-old Luke Tipene at a Halloween party in 2014.
Tipene was killed when Skeene swung a broken beer bottle at him, which hit Tipene in the neck.
Luke Tipene later died from blood loss in hospital.
Family spokesperson Sean Wilson said the result isn't what they hoped for, but it is what it is and the family is finally getting some closure.
He said they came for justice and now their focus is keeping Luke's memory alive.
