Some cold water on the major recommendation from the coroner's report in the death of Moko Rangitoheriri.

Coroner Wallace Bain recommended a national registry of children to facilitate scheduled and unscheduled check ups on families to ensure kids are safe at home.

Tracey Martin said the vast majority of families love and care for their children.

She said she understands what Dr Bain was trying to do, but thinks there are better ways to reduce child abuse.

"To actually have a compulsory sort of register, with a State Agency with the right to just drop by out of the blue, to check whether you're looking after your children, it sounds extreme to me."
