UPDATED 2.43PM: A man who allegedly fell victim to a 16 hour gang bashing managed to chew his way free after one of his captors dozed off.

Dawson Reihana said they beat him with knuckle dusters, hammers and an ash tray, while he was bound with sellotape.

Reihana managed to get away by chewing the tape and hiding it in a nearby drawer, after the man put in charge of watching him fell asleep.

He then followed a cord which led to a cellphone, before calling 111.

Reihana has had his interview with police just after the attack, played in court today.

Seven men associated to the Mongrel Mob are currently on trial at the High Court in Christchurch.

A DVD interview which was played to the jury showed a battered Dawson Reihana in a hospital bed.

He claimed he was attacked for hours on end at two Christchurch properties.

He said he was hit so badly he couldn’t open his eye lids.
