While the offer's on the table, Cavalier Bremworth's CEO isn't expecting many staff to jump at the prospect of relocating.

This comes after the carpet company announced yesterday it was cutting 65 jobs nationwide, with many roles relocated to other parts of the country.

It will close its operations in Christchurch, moving them to a bigger plant in Whanganui at the end of October.

Wool spinning operations will also move from Whanganui to Napier.

CEO Paul Alston said they know the changes will be felt across the country but think Whanganui will be affected the most.

"We're probably one of the biggest employers in Whanganui so Whanganui's going to be more impacted."

While staff have the option to move to up north, Mr Alston said it's a hard option to sell.

"No, I'm not expecting many to take the opportunity to move to the North Island. We're struggling to get people to move from Whanganui to Napier, which is probably an easier shift. We'll obviously help with relocation should they wish to move.

FIRST Union Christchurch organiser David Bristow said though the company's promising to help staff find work, options are limited.

"It's very hard to find jobs in this sector. Obviously, there will be people who will go into other sectors, but of course, they all have to be trained and upskilled around those jobs as well, so it is a very challenging time.

"The company's indicated to us that they will have some employers come in. There are jobs going in some other sectors, but it will come down to the availability of those workers, if those jobs fit in the time frames that the company are trying to propose."

The Hawke's Bay Chamber of Commerce is welcoming the announcement of almost 40 new jobs coming to Napier.

Chamber of Commerce CEO Wayne Walford said it's a very positive sign for the local economy.

"It's great to see new skills being brought into town and using the existing infrastructure and making it more productive."
