Auckland could be one of the first cities in the world to use Uber's flying taxis.

The company is working with Boeing to make helicopter-like aircraft, which it plans to trial in one city outside the US as soon as 2020.

The ride-demand company says the New Zealand city is near the top of its list for the UberAir trial, along with Australian cities Sydney and Melbourne.

Head of Aviation Nikhil Goel while Auckland is smaller city than some of the Aussie options, there are a number of reasons they might choose New Zealand.

That's because Uber believes there will be massive demand for Aucklanders to get away from the bumper-to-bumper traffic.

"The Auckland CBD to the airport, if you were going to take that trip tomorrow morning at peak, it would take about an hour by automobile... but if you were to do it by UberAir, it would take only nine minutes."

He says Auckland has the slowest motorway speeds in all of Australasia and they're heartened by the positive regulatory response to another aviation startup in Canterbury.
