Relief for parents of kindergarten children in north and west Auckland.

Northern Auckland Kindergarten Association has decided not to open for seven hours a day and nearly all year round after 300 people signed a petition against the changes.

Instead, fees will go from $5 to $6 an hour for any hours above the 20 hours free.

The hourly donation will also double from 50 cents to $1 and there'll be least one more holiday programme.

Petition organiser Frances Cross is pleased the association chose not to go ahead with a seven-hour day for kindy kids.

"Can you imagine three and a half-year-olds doing seven-hour days? I know they said there was an option that parents didn't have to put them in there, but you're still going to be charged for the hours even if you weren't there."
